Dozens of dialects are spoken in Japan. Dialects typically differ in terms of pitch accent, inflectional morphology, vocabulary, particle usage, and pronunciation.

They are mainly divided into three dialectal groups:

Eastern, Western, Southern (Kyushyu group)

The standard Japanese, is based on Tokyo dialect.
