Efik Language has been variously classified as a member of the Lower-Cross group, of the Delta-Cross sub-family, which is an off shoot of the enlarged Cross River sub-branch that is a major constitution of the Benue-Congo family of the Niger Congo Phylum. It is the official language of Cross River State in Nigeria.
