Hiri Motu, also known as Police Motu, Pidgin Motu, or just Hiri, is an official language of Papua New Guinea. It is a simplified version of Motu, of the Austronesian language family. It is a Creole based on the Austronesian language Motu (still
spoken by several people in Central province).
It developed around 1900 as a contact language for speakers from different language backgrounds in the Motu-speaking environment around Port Moresby, especially members of the indigenous police (hence its alternative name Police Motu). Hiri Motu is still widely used in the southern part of country , but appears to be receding under the pressure from Tok Pisin.
