Dagbani is classified as a member of the western Oti-volta group of the Gur branch of the Niger-Congo language family also called 'Mabia' languages. Native speakers of this language are called Dagombas (singular) and Dagomba (plural) respectively.

Key Dialects: Dagbani and Nanuni. Dagbani has further sub-dialects as Tomosili (Western dialect) and Nayahili (Eastern dialect).
