Georgian (ქართული ენა) is a Kartvelian language(South Caucasian language family: Georgian, Migrelian, Svan and Laz)) spoken by Georgians. It is the official language of Georgia. Georgian is the literary language for all regional subgroups of Georgians, including those who speak other Kartvelian languages: Svans, Mingrelians and the Laz. In the Georgian language, Georgia is called Sakartvelo, the language Kartuli and the people Kartvelebi.
Dialects of Georgian are from Imereti, Racha-Lechkhumi, Guria, Adjara, Imerkhevi (in Turkey), Kartli, Kakheti, Saingilo (in Azerbaijan), Tusheti, Khevsureti, Khevi, Pshavi, Fereydan (in Iran), Mtiuleti and Meskheti.
The three tribes which constitute the modern Georgian people are the Karts, Zans and Svans, corresponding to speakers of modern Kartvelian (South Caucasian) languages, that is Georgian, Megrelian-Laz (Colchian or Zan) and Svan. The Kartvelian language family descended from Proto-Georgian (Kartvelian) which began to break up into distinct languages about four thousand years ago.
Megrelian is spoken in western Georgia (province of Samegrelo) by about half a million people and Laz is spoken mainly in Sarpi, a southwest Georgian village on the border of Turkey. Two distinct dialects of Megruli exist, the Northwestern Zugdidi -Samurzakano and the Southeastern Senaki dialects
The languages spoken belong to different branches of the Kartvelian or South Caucasian language family (Georgian, Migrelian, Svan and Laz).
