Lao or Laotian is the official language of Laos. Lao language is spoken by more than three million people worldwide. Lao is also spoken in other countries including Myanmar (Burma), Indonesia, Malaysia.
It is closely related to Thai and belongs to Tai subgroup of the Sino-Tibetan family of languages. The writing system of Lao is an abugida and is closely related to the writing system used in Thai.
The Lao language has many dialects; Vientiane Lao, is the predominant dialect due to its use in the capital (hence it gets its name), is widely understood throughout the country.
