The Yi (彝) language (own name in standard dialect: Nuosu), also known as Loloish, belongs to the Yi branch of the Tibeto-Burman family of the Sino-Tibetan phylum. The name “Yi” refers to both the Yi language and the whole Yi branch of languages (Loloish), because it has the most population in this language family branch. Sometimes Yi,Burmese and Zaiwa are collectively called Burmese-Lolo.

Yi language is grouped into four main dialects by geographical distribution. The Northern dialect is mainly distributed in Sichuan province; Xide dialect is a representative. The Southern dialect is primarily in southern Yunnan and is represented by Xinping dialect. The Eastern dialect is in the eastern part of Yunnan and Guizhou provinces; Luquan is a representative. The Western dialect is mainly in western Yunnan and is represented by Weishan.

Nuosu ( Nosu) also known as Northern Yi, Liangshan Yi, and Sichuan Yi, is the standard dialect in usuage.
